Protest Song of the Week: 'Soon' by Steven Keene
From “Shadowproof,” CJ Baker, July 25, 2022
Shadowproof named “Soon” its Protest Song of the Week, calling Steven Keene a veteran New York folk artist known for timely social critique on songs like “Them and Us” and “Save Yourself.” The piece hears “Soon” as a response to a world drifting toward war and climate disaster that still holds on to hope. The Ongoing History of Protest Music featured the song as its Daily Dose of Protest two days later.
“Like many of the best protest tunes, he successfully balances a sense of mourning with a feeling of hopefulness.” – Shadowproof
